The Palkhi Yatra is a pilgrimage procession that has been celebrated for over 700 years, beginning in the 13th century. It is closely associated with the Bhakti movement and saints like Sant Dnyaneshwar and Sant Tukaram.
The pilgrimage covers a distance of approximately 250 km starting from Pune and ending at Pandharpur.
On average, around 1 million to 2 million people participate in the Palkhi procession each year. This number can vary based on several factors, including the weather, local conditions, and other logistical aspects, but it consistently attracts a large number of devotees from various parts of Maharashtra and beyond.
The Palkhi procession is a symbol of unity and equality, transcending social and economic barriers. People from different castes, communities, backgrounds and even religions come together to participate in the Wari for the spiritual walk.
The Pilgrim takes 21 days to reach its destination scheduled to arrive on the auspicious day of Ashadhi Ekadashi which typically takes place in the month of June or July
It is a spiritual journey to Lord Vithoba's temple in Pandharpur promoting equality, unity, and devotion and plays an important part of Maharashtra's cultural and religious heritage.
